Drummer Boy Statue on Garden Street Recreation Ground
Drummer Boy Statue on Garden Street Recreation Ground

This picture depicts the statue of a Drummer Boy in the process of being made, with the sculpture Michael Grevatte. The finished statue, which is made of bronze and is 6ft6ins is situated on Garden Street recreation ground and is part of the re-generation of the area.

The theme for the statue is based on the story of William Lane, a real life drummer boy for the Dorset Regiment. In 1822 he stopped to talk to some youths, who unbeknown to him had been tormenting the resident of a nearby house. One of the youths started banging William's drum and the enraged resident shot him, presuming him to be part of the gang and he died 3 days later.
