The finished statue, which is made of bronze and is 6ft6ins is situated on Garden Street recreation ground and is part of the re-generation of the area. The theme for the statue is based on the story of William Lane, a real life drummer boy for the Dorset Regiment. In 1822 he stopped to talk to some youths, who unbeknown to him had been tormenting the resident of a nearby house. One of the youths started banging William's drum and the enraged resident shot him, presuming him to be part of the gang and he died 3 days later. |
